Server VDI and FrankenCloud?

Beware - Here comes the monster :)

I just can't help loving the phrase: FrankenCloud. What better word for a "hybrid cloud monster", that enabled you to move machines around and utilize more than one cloud platform. All controlled by one cloud management platform. This all comes back to the old saying: Don't put all your eggs in the same basket - and I agree. At least I try not to be to religious about technology, but that can be hard if you really "believe" in something... Will we try to kill the monster because we don't understand it? Properly!

And Server VDI?

Is that another 2100 century word for Remote Desktop? Well, the OS is the same and you will need a RDS CAL. The difference is that it's a 1 user to 1 OS, and not the multiple users on 1 OS.

Can we find any use of it? Isn't it just a way to get away with the annoying Microsoft licensing model for VDI implementations? I guess it is, and service providers and hosting companies can and are using this for the time being until (don't stay up late for it...) Microsoft changes it's SPLA licensing model to include desktop OS.

All you need is:

  • An vendor to develop an agent that is supported on the Server OS
  • Be sure it is supported and not just a "hack"
  • Tweak the server OS to look like the desktop OS, the user might not see the difference if you are good
  • Be sure your apps work on the server OS, even better virtualize them.

One vendor you could go with is Citrix, who now has support for server OS in there XenDesktop agent stack. But be aware - this technology is only available for Service Providers and not really useful for the enterprise company.

So get back to the drawing board and build that DaaS cloud you where thinking about - the future is already here :)

Dell and HP churn out VDI hardware as thin client war heats up

Let the war continue!

Dell and HP churn out VDI hardware as thin client war heats up

HDX SoC

SoC?

Short for "System-on-Chip", is a "new" initiative which should drive the VDI implementations to a larger scale.

The next gen HDX devices where presented at this years Synergy, but where also mentioned last year at Barcelona - why did it take so long? Yes, i'm a very impatient person when it comes to new technology - I want hand's on now!

SoC annoncement from Citrix

The price tag for VDI is one of the foremost reasons why companies don't dive into Desktop virtualization..

Mark Templeton thinks that if we can drive the price down on the end point, the overall cost of implementing VDI would be lower and he is right - but only to a certain degree. Of course, we should not neglect the cost of managing end points but.... what about storage, licenses etc.? Why don't Citrix lower there price tag on XenDesktop?

As people get more mobile, use more devices and have higher demands to the apps, deploying a thin client solution can and will only fit within some part of the company. Do people only use one device today to get to there apps and be productive? I think not!

So it get's complicated and expensive - and again customers hesitate on VDI.

DVS Simplified

One thing Dell has done, is making a solution that simplifies implementing VDI - Dell DVS Simplified

Read more about it here: DVS Simplified

It has been made available since May 3 - Check it out, it is really that simple. And if you combine it with a (Soon to become a Dell company) Wyse SoC client, the Xenith 2 - you will not find it cheaper and more simple anywhere. Read the press release here: Wyse Xenith 2 press release

SoC is exiting and I can't wait to get my hand's on a device to see it's performance - stay tuned here for an review!

Blog started

Hello everyone

And welcome to the blog of @henrikmc!
Year 2012 is turning out to be a awesome year in the EUC space, where the transformation is really taking off from the traditional desktop PC and into a much more wide selection and fluid way to get to your apps. The apps are really what it's all about, isn't it? and the way to get the apps to the end user in the most efficient and flexible way. To power the modern user work styles - this is what we try to accomplish.

Happy to see you here, hopefully I can provide you with some inspiration and knowledge which will be contributing to your success.

Regards,

Henrik M. Christensen
